As long as you are engaging in safe and protected sexual intercourse, it is entirely alright to have sex during a woman’s period. But then, keep in mind that HIV and a few other STDs could be passed on more easily during a woman's period. It is recommended to use condom if you have any doubt on the woman’s sexual history and HIV status.
If the woman is someone you know like your girlfriend or your wife, having sex during her period is okay and will not cause any harm for both of you. In fact, some doctors recommend having sex while a woman is on her period because it makes her uterus contract and, therefore, helps push out menstrual fluid, thus decreasing the chances of infection. If you're both comfortable doing it, then you have no problem at all.
